So last week I:
Harvested what I could of the cauliflower. The heads were very small and after four months in the ground I could not justify more time. Not sure I will try cauliflower again next year; might be best to just go with successive plantings of broccoli.
Harvested more rutabaga, carrots, lettuce and celery. Gave some to Daniel and Hsonia.
On Tuesday, before the rain, I got more peas planted and more lettuce seed and lettuce seedlings planted. I will need to mulch those lettuce seedlings so that they are not smashed into the soil every time I water.
Last Friday I visited the Big Daddy Community Garden in Emeryville, just a stone’s throw from Daniel and Hsonia’s new loft. Vickie was wonderful to talk with, a real plantaphile. The cauliflower and brussel sprouts and broccoli in THAT garden were huge! Just shows what a different microclimate can do for certain crops. Also visited the Emeryville Organic Community Garden and learned some tips from long time manager Sam. Will be sharing some of Sam’s ideas and ideas from Vickie too with our community garden members.
